Biography

Matthew Franks is an Associate Professor in English Theatre Studies at the University of Warwick, where he has been a faculty member since 2017. His academic focus encompasses Victorian, modern, and contemporary theatre, alongside book history, media studies, and digital humanities. His notable publication, Subscription Theater (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2020), explores the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century theatrical subscription and its relation to civic subscription and collective funding. He is currently engaged in research projects analyzing theatre welfare-state messaging from 1939 and the cultural history of the Central Office of Information from 1946 to 2011. Franks co-convenes the Theatre Performance Research Association's Theatre Performance Histories working group with colleagues Nicholas Holden and Philippa Burt. He teaches across joint-honours degrees in English Theatre Studies and Film Literature, and supervises dissertations in modern and contemporary theatre media.
