Biography

Matthew Halsall graduated with a degree in Physics from the University of Sheffield in 1986 and obtained his PhD in Applied Physics from the University of Hull in 1990. He worked as a Research Associate at the University of East Anglia in Norwich and at Université Joseph Fourier in Grenoble, France, from 1989 to 1994. In 1994, he was appointed as a Lecturer in the School of Physics at the University of Manchester and transitioned to the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 2004. In 2011, he was promoted to Chair of Photonics. His research interests focus on optical spectroscopy, electronic materials, and the development of silicon optoelectronic and photovoltaic devices, utilizing spectroscopic techniques and instrumentation. He has received recognition for his work, including the Royal Academy of Engineering's Global Research Award in 2006, and is active in various collaborations related to sustainable development goals.
