Biography

Matthew Harris is an Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago Divinity School, specializing in the intersection of African American religion, Black radical traditions, and the politics of culture. He focuses on recovering histories of struggle, offering theoretical and practical tools to reimagine the critical study of society and reshape the world. His current project, 'Black Religion Sign Saturn,' explores the religious history of outer space as a site for Black freedom dreams in the twentieth century. Harris obtained his BA from the University of California, Los Angeles, and earned his MDiv from Princeton Theological Seminary. He completed his PhD in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Furthermore, he has been recognized as a Young Scholar by the American Religion Center for the Study of Religion and American Culture at Indiana University Indianapolis.
