Matthew Hepworth obtained his BSc (Hons) in Microbiology from the University of Manchester, where he spent an industrial year working at the Mayo Clinic in the USA. He undertook his PhD in the laboratory of Richard Grencis at the University of Manchester, focusing on immunity to helminth infections in the intestine. After completing his PhD, he trained as a postdoctoral researcher at Humboldt University Berlin under Susanne Hartmann, where he further developed his expertise in mucosal immunology. He joined laboratories led by Gregory Sonnenberg and David Artis at the University of Pennsylvania and Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City in 2012. Since returning to the University of Manchester in 2016 as a Wellcome Trust Sir Henry Dale Fellow, he has established an independent research group. His research interests include chronic inflammatory diseases, particularly inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and asthma, which present significant global economic and public health challenges. His work aims to understand innate immune pathways regulating inflammation at mucosal barrier sites, with a focus on the role of innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) in mediating inflammation and tissue repair. He is committed to improving understanding of immune pathways to identify new therapeutic targets for chronic inflammatory conditions such as IBD and asthma.
Includes MSc in Advanced Electrical Power Systems and MSc in Communications and Signal Processing.
