Biography

Matthew Hynam is a Senior Lecturer in Architectural Design Thinking at the University of the West of England, Bristol. His research specializes in the architectural design practice and the interaction of diverse media within architectural environments. Matthew’s doctoral research focused on architectural design thinking, exploring the agency of media in fostering architectural creativity and pedagogy. His PhD thesis, titled 'Design Leaps: Divergent Thinking Techniques in Media and Architectural Design', particularly interests exchanges between film, architecture, and urbanism, employing film as a research design method. His design-led research has seen films screened at various international festivals including the Cinecity architectural film project and the Architecture Film Festival in Lisbon. Matthew has worked for both large and small architectural practices, including Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, and co-founded Studio KAH, where he undertook diverse architectural projects including historical reuses, community projects, and competitions. He currently teaches in the final year design studio of the BA(Hons) Interior Architecture and coordinates the 'Architecture Talks!' lecture series at UWE, collaborating with colleagues to present innovative approaches to architectural practice and research.
