Biography

Matt heads the Energy & Emissions Research Lab (EERL), conducting internationally renowned research quantifying and mitigating methane and black carbon emissions in the upstream energy sector. He is also the Scientific Director of the NSERC FlareNet Strategic Network, a collaboration involving five Canadian universities and various national and international partners aimed at addressing flaring in the oil and gas sector. His current research interests encompass aerial quantification of methane emissions, including the creation of measurement-based inventories, as well as the quantification and mitigation of emissions from gas flaring. This involves large-scale wind tunnel experiments and field work. He is also focused on optical diagnostics, developing innovative technologies for measuring methane flux and quantifying black carbon emissions. Matt engages in technical analysis to support evidence-based methane regulations and standards, and explores alternative approaches for methane detection, including satellite systems and UAV-based techniques. His work aims to translate lab-based research into practical outcomes and conducts techno-economic analyses of greenhouse gas mitigation potential in the upstream energy sector.
