Biography

Matthew Kaufman is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Organismal Biology and Anatomy at the University of Chicago. His research focuses on the integration of calcium imaging and computational modeling techniques to study the decision-making processes of neuronal populations in motor control. Through these studies, he captures and manipulates the activity of hundreds to thousands of neurons within the mouse cortex, aiming to elucidate how different areas of the brain compute variables necessary for guiding behavior. Moreover, his work employs optogenetic methods to determine the causal roles of various cell types in cortical computations and pharmacological manipulations to explore the effects of psychiatric drugs on behavior. He has received several fellowships and awards for his research efforts, contributing significantly to the fields of neuroscience and computational analysis.
