Matthew J. Kotchen is the Langdon K. Storm Professor of Economics at Yale University, with primary appointment in the Yale School of the Environment and secondary appointments in the Yale School of Management and the Department of Economics. He is a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). Kotchen's research interests intersect environmental and public economics policy. He joined the Yale faculty in 2009 and has held visiting positions at Williams College, the University of California campuses in Santa Barbara and Berkeley, Stanford University, and Resources for the Future. In addition to his academic work, Kotchen has served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Environment and Energy at the U.S. Department of the Treasury in Washington, D.C. He has also worked as the visiting chief economist for the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and served on the Environmental Economics Advisory Committee of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Currently, he is a founding organizer and editor of a new initiative related to Environmental Energy Policy and the Economy. Kotchen is currently accepting doctoral students for the Spring 2026 semester.
