Biography

Matthew McCarty is an Associate Professor in the Department of Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern Studies at the University of British Columbia, specializing in Roman Archaeology and ancient religions. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Classical Civilization & Art History from Yale University and both a Master of Studies and Doctorate in Archaeology from the University of Oxford. His research focuses on the intersections of social power, materiality, and worship within the context of the Roman Empire, with particular interests in North Africa, Dacia, and Syria. McCarty has directed excavations at significant archaeological sites, including the mithraeum at Apulum in Romania, and he is involved in projects aiming to understand the socio-economic structures of rural Roman society. He regularly teaches courses on Classical Archaeology and has developed a new course highlighting the social contexts of Greek and Roman technology. His work is informed by interdisciplinary approaches that juxtapose archaeological evidence with historical texts and practices, thereby offering fresh insights into themes of imperialism and identity in the ancient world. He has numerous publications on these topics, contributing broadly to the knowledge of Roman provincial archaeology and ancient religion.
