Biography

Matthew McDowell joined Georgia Tech in fall 2015 as a Professor with a joint appointment at the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering and the School of Materials Science and Engineering. Prior to this, he was a postdoctoral scholar in the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology. He received his Ph.D. in 2013 from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford University. The research group led by Dr. McDowell focuses on understanding materials for energy storage and transforming their operation, applying knowledge to engineer batteries and energy storage devices that improve performance. His research aims to make technological advances that significantly impact society, such as enabling batteries with lower cost, higher energy density, and enhanced sustainability, thus promoting widespread vehicle electrification and the use of renewable energy. Current projects include solid-state batteries, lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries, low-temperature battery chemistries, new battery materials aimed at enhanced sustainability, and grid storage technologies. He also serves as the co-director of the Georgia Tech Advanced Battery Center.
