Biography

Matthew McDowell joined Georgia Tech in fall 2015 as a professor with a joint appointment at the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering and the School of Materials Science and Engineering. He previously worked as a postdoctoral scholar in the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology. McDowell earned his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Stanford University in 2013. His research group focuses on understanding materials for energy storage, transforming their operation, and using this knowledge to engineer batteries and energy storage devices for improved performance. Technological advances in this area are crucial for reducing costs, increasing energy density, and enhancing sustainability, thereby facilitating widespread vehicle electrification and the use of renewable energy. Current projects include solid-state batteries, lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries, low-temperature battery chemistries, and new battery materials for enhanced sustainability, as well as grid storage technologies. McDowell is also a co-director of the Georgia Tech Advanced Battery Center.
