Biography

Matthew received a Bachelor of Engineering and a PhD from the University of Queensland. His research focuses on high-speed flow, utilizing expansion tube facilities to investigate scramjet engine performance and spacecraft aerothermodynamics. He has experience with rocket-based flight programs, having worked at the Woomera Test Facility. In 2009, he joined the Oxford Thermofluids Institute as a research associate, where he researched turbine internal cooling passage performance and particle deposition in turbomachinery. Matthew was appointed Associate Professor at the University of Oxford in 2013 and became a Senior Research Fellow in Hypersonics. He has received significant accolades, including a Senior Research Fellowship from the Royal Academy of Engineering and a partnership with the Ministry of Defence. He leads the MoD Academic Centre of Excellence in Hypersonic Science and Technology and was promoted to Professor in 2023. Matthew has established research groups focusing on hypersonics and particle deposition, and has contributed to the development of various hypersonic wind tunnels. He has supervised 17 graduated doctoral students and published 54 journal articles and 135 conference papers to date.
