Biography

Matthew Meyerson leads a research group at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, which he began in 1998. His work focuses on understanding the causes of human cancer through genomic approaches, with a particular emphasis on lung cancer. The Meyerson Laboratory explores various interwoven areas, including Lung Cancer Biology, Cancer Microbiome, Cancer Genomics, and Genome-inspired Cancer Drug Discovery. The lab discovers genome alterations that contribute to lung cancer development and investigates the association of Fusobacterium species with colorectal carcinoma, which has opened new fields of microbiome research in human cancer. Over the past 25 years, Meyerson's team has developed and optimized state-of-the-art technologies for describing somatic genomes of cancer, including next-generation and long-read sequencing approaches. This research has led to the identification of critical genes related to somatic mutations and has initiated efforts in cancer drug discovery based on genomic knowledge, resulting in compounds currently in phase III clinical trials. His work exemplifies a commitment to innovatively applying genomic data to develop effective cancer treatments while sparing healthy cells.
