Biography

Matthew Mosca's teaching and research interests center on Chinese Inner Asian history, specifically focusing on the history of the Qing empire (1644-1912) and its foreign relations within a global context. His primary research interest is in the development of historiography surrounding Chinggis Khan and the Mongol Empire within the Eurasian context from 1650 to 1900. Mosca has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses on topics including Modern China, East Asia, Qing Foreign Relations, Asian Empires, and Borderlands, as well as various seminars in Chinese history. He obtained his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 2008 and has held fellowships at the University of California, Berkeley, and the Hong Kong Institute of the Humanities and Social Sciences. In the 2013-2014 academic year, he was awarded a Mellon Fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Study.
