Matthew Mullane is an Assistant Professor in Art History at Radboud University. He received his PhD from Princeton University and has held a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University’s Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies in Tokyo. His forthcoming book, 'World Observation: Empire, Architecture, Global Archive Itō Chūta' (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2025), presents new perspectives on the history of global architecture through nineteenth-century Japan, emphasizing the role of 'observation' in architectural thought. Mullane's research explores the collaboration between architects and scientists to develop new epistemologies in global history, with a focus on case studies involving geologists and architects in England and entomologists and engineers in colonial Japan. In addition to historical scholarship, he has written about the aesthetic and ethical dimensions of contemporary digital technologies affecting architecture, such as virtual reality and blockchain. His work has been published in several architecture journals and anthologies, and he is involved in ongoing research about the reception of global architecture history in Meiji Japan and the creation of 'intermedia' networks among Japanese corporations.
