Matthew Nelson completed his PhD at the John Innes Centre in the UK in 2000 and has extensive experience in molecular genetics, particularly in crop species. He began his career as a molecular marker scientist at Seminis Vegetable Seeds in the Netherlands before joining the University of Western Australia (UWA) as a Research Fellow in crop molecular genetics. His research focuses on understanding genetic diversity in Brassica and lupin species and exploring genome evolution and trait mapping in crops. Nelson has supervised six PhD and additional MSc and Honours students and has managed molecular marker projects for the canola breeding program at Canola Breeders Western Australia. He served as Research Leader for Crop Plants at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, UK, before returning to Australia to lead a national canola improvement program at CSIRO. His current research interests include canola adaptation and legume domestication. Nelson's expertise extends to genomic technologies and sustainable agricultural practices, significantly contributing to plant breeding and genetic diversity management.
