Biography

Matthew Neufeld is a historian specializing in early modern Britain and Europe, with a focus on the social and cultural history of war. He is committed to fostering historical thinking and connecting past events to the present for his students and the wider public. Neufeld enjoys making the study of history engaging and teaches a variety of courses at the University of Saskatchewan. His teaching covers topics such as War, Violence, and Religion in Early Modern Europe, and he supervises MA and doctoral students interested in social and cultural history from 1650 to 1750. Neufeld's research explores the impacts of warfare on social changes and state formation in post-Reformation Britain and Europe. In 2022, he was awarded an Insight Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada to research the treatment of prisoners of war, studying historical perspectives and moral decision-making related to military conflicts in the 18th century.
