Biography

Matthew Parrott is an Associate Professor and Fellow Tutor in the Faculty of Philosophy at St Hilda’s College, University of Oxford. His research explores central topics in the philosophy of mind and engages with contemporary issues in the cognitive science of philosophy and psychiatry. His broader research interests include self-consciousness, self-reference, perceptual knowledge, and the nature of scientific explanations, with a specific focus on the philosophy of David Hume. Currently, he is developing complementary research projects that examine philosophical questions concerning self-knowledge and the understanding of others’ minds, including a project that investigates the nature of delusional thinking and how individuals form beliefs about the world. He offers tutorials for students in Logic, General Philosophy, Knowledge, Reality, Philosophy of Mind, and Cognitive Science. Over the course of his career, he has given lectures on various topics including Philosophy of Mind, Psychology, Cognitive Science, and Mental Health. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, and holds a B.A. from the University of Michigan. Prior to joining St Hilda's, he held a Birmingham Fellowship in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Birmingham and was a Lecturer in Philosophy at King's College London, and previously, he held an Andrew Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Oxford.
