Matthew Powell-Palm is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University. He earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 2020, following an M.S. and B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 2016 and 2015, respectively. Powell-Palm's research focuses on the intersection of thermodynamics and various applications, including biological thermodynamics and cryopreservation of organs. His work explores high-dimensional thermodynamic systems, entropy engineering, and innovative processes for waste heat recovery. He has contributed to the understanding of thermodynamic processes involved in medicine and conservation biology, as well as planetary thermodynamics related to icy worlds. Powell-Palm has received several awards in recognition of his work, including the DARPA Young Faculty Award and the ASME / Pi Tau Sigma Gold Medal, both anticipated in 2025. He is also the recipient of the Arthur W. Rowe Paper Award from the Society for Cryobiology in 2023.
