Biography

Born in Wensleydale, North Yorkshire, UK, in 1981, Matthew Powner earned a first-class master’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Manchester in 2005. He has received multiple awards, including the Royal Society of Chemistry prize and the Degussa award. Powner completed a medicinal chemistry internship at AstraZeneca and later returned to Manchester to complete his Ph.D. in 2009. He received the EPSRC Doctoral Prize postdoctoral fellowship and worked with Nobel laureate Jack Szostak at Massachusetts General Hospital during his Harvard Research Fellowship from 2009 to 2011. In 2011, he joined University College London as a lecturer in the Chemistry Department, and he is currently a Professor of Organic Chemistry. His research is supported by the Simons Foundation to explore the origins of life. Powner has been recognized with numerous fellowships and awards throughout his career, including the ISSOL Stanley Miller Award (2011), the SET Britain Roscoe Medal (2012), and the Blavatnik Award Honoree (2021).
