Biography

Matthew O. Schrenk is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences at Michigan State University. He also holds a position in the Department of Microbiology, Genetics, & Immunology and the BioMolecular Science Gateway. His research focuses on subsurface environments such as continental and oceanic habitats, where he studies the diversity, distribution, and activities of microorganisms in the deep subsurface biosphere. Utilizing molecular biological approaches combined with geochemical analyses, his work investigates high-pH microbial ecosystems formed by the serpentinization of ultramafic rocks in the deep Earth, as well as high-temperature ecosystems associated with volcanically-driven hydrothermal venting in the oceans. These investigations aim to shed light on the contributions of subsurface microorganisms to the global carbon budget, with applications that range from biotechnology to alternative energy strategies.
