Biography

Matthew Sergi, Associate Professor in English, specializes in medieval English drama and performance. His monograph, Practical Cues Social Spectacle Chester Plays (University of Chicago Press, 2020), uncovers new insights into early staging, design, and acting through the examination of twenty-five short plays based on reimagined Bible stories, created by artisans and youth on mobile wagon stages in the busy streets of fifteenth and sixteenth-century Chester. His work received an Honourable Mention for the Medieval Renaissance Drama Society's 2021 David Bevington Award for New Book in Early Drama Studies. Additionally, Sergi has received multiple awards for his shorter research publications, including the 2016 Martin Stevens Award and the 2012 Barbara Palmer Award from the MRDS for his essays on Early Drama and Archival Research. His teaching spans various undergraduate courses, covering the evolution of English drama from medieval times to the early modern period and includes topics on English literature and linguistic history. In 2019, he was honored with a campus-wide Early Career Teaching Award at the University of Toronto. Sergi's academic interests bridge the historical context of performances with their practical applications today.
