Dr. Matthew Sorbara is an Assistant Professor in the College of Biological Science at the University of Guelph. He completed his BSc in Microbiology at the University of Toronto, during which he developed an interest in the interactions between enteric pathogens and the innate immune system. He pursued his research interests through a PhD in Immunology at the University of Toronto, studying the roles of autophagy proteins and Nod-like receptors (NLRs) in the epithelial cell responses to infections caused by invasive enteric pathogens. Following his PhD, Sorbara received a CIHR Postdoctoral Fellowship to work at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, where his research focused on the mechanisms of microbiota’s colonization resistance against highly antibiotic-resistant Enterobacteriaceae. In 2019, his laboratory moved to the Duchossois Family Institute at the University of Chicago, where he began working on establishing and characterizing a biobank of commensal microbes to optimize live biotherapeutic designs. He joined the University of Guelph in September 2021, where his lab investigates the complex metabolic interactions among the members of microbiota, microbial crosstalk with hosts, and the role of diverse commensals in colonization resistance.
