Biography

Matthew Stallard is a Research Associate at UCL's Centre for the Study of the Legacies of British Slavery, focusing on database development and innovative digital techniques to reconstruct personal and community histories related to enslavement as part of the Valuable Lives project. He has experience as a project manager in the Centre’s public history collaborations and co-led the Global Threads project, which traces connections in global narratives of resistance and solidarity related to colonization and slavery in the context of Manchester’s industrial heritage. Stallard has published extensively on themes of environment, colonization, class, race, and Victorian public discourse, specifically contributing to the post-industrial regional identity through the Inventing Black Country research project. He has conducted various public community history projects and engagement events, including oral history research across continents and served as a contributor and advisor for the Guardian’s Cotton Capital series. Stallard completed his PhD in American Studies at the University of Manchester in 2017 and is currently unable to supervise prospective doctoral students.
