Biography

Matthew Tonts is a Professor in Geography at the University of Western Australia, where he has been a faculty member since 2001. Over the years, he has served in various leadership roles, including as the Head of the School of Earth and Environment from 2010 to 2016 and the Director of the Institute for Regional Development from 2005 to 2010. His research interests are diverse, focusing on environmental geography, regional development, rural communities, spatial planning, and urban geography, particularly within the context of Western Australia. With 150 scholarly publications to his name, Tonts has supervised more than 40 PhD students to completion and has collaborated with a variety of governmental and non-governmental organizations on projects related to regional development, environmental management, and urban systems. In recognition of his contributions to the field, he was elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences Australia in 2020.
