Biography

Matthew Torres is an Associate Professor in the School of Biological Sciences at Georgia Institute of Technology. His research primarily focuses on protein post-translational modifications (PTMs) and their role in various cell biological processes including cell division, signal transduction, and epigenetics. With 19 years of experience, Torres has developed numerous mass spectrometry/proteomics methodologies and engaged in both in vitro and in vivo studies to elucidate the molecular mechanisms surrounding PTMs. He integrates quantitative proteomics with bioinformatics to explore G protein signaling and protein-protein interaction networks influenced by PTMs such as phosphorylation and ubiquitination. His lab has produced innovative bioinformatics tools and resources for predicting functional PTM hotspots, and they actively contribute to the understanding of intramolecular dynamics using machine learning approaches. In addition to his research, Torres is committed to education and mentorship at Georgia Tech, having trained a number of PhD and MS students, and emphasizing high standards in communication and research rigor in his mentoring style. He also plays significant roles in service to the wider academic community, including leadership in core facilities and research seminars.
