Biography

Matthew Vander Heiden is the Director of the Koch Institute at MIT and holds the Lester Wolfe (1919) Professorship in Molecular Biology. He is a practicing oncologist and an instructor in medicine at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/Harvard Medical School. Matthew earned both his medical and doctoral degrees from the University of Chicago and conducted his doctoral research in the laboratory of Craig Thompson. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Boston's Brigham & Women's Hospital and a hematology-oncology fellowship at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Massachusetts General Hospital. After his training, he served as a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Lewis Cantley at Harvard Medical School before joining the MIT faculty in 2010. His research focuses on understanding the metabolic requirements of cancer cells, improving the understanding of cancer metabolism, and developing new strategies for targeting metabolism in cancer therapy. He is a member of various scientific advisory boards and has contributed to numerous publications in the field of cancer metabolism.
