Biography

Matthew Vitz is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of California, San Diego. He received his Ph.D. in Latin American Caribbean History from New York University in 2010. Prior to joining UC-San Diego's History Department, he served as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Dartmouth College and held a postdoctoral fellowship at the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies at UCSD. His research focuses on urban and environmental history, with a particular emphasis on Mexico and Latin America, addressing topics such as energy history and the politics of development. Vitz has authored the book 'City Lake: Urban Political Ecology of Growth in Mexico City,' published by Duke University Press in 2018. His recent publications include articles on Mexican beachfront tourism and urban social history, and he is currently completing an e-book titled 'Globalizing Urban Environmental History' for Cambridge University Press. His ongoing research project examines the impacts of state-led capitalist development in Mexico during the late twentieth century, exploring how various citizens responded to these changes.
