Matthew Walls studies the deep history of community-environment relationships and how people perceive and act together in a world of flux. His work contributes to the theory on the role of creativity in long-term processes and focuses on questions that address ecological knowledge, constructed over generations, and the dynamics of practice-based communities over time. Walls obtained a Master’s degree in Archaeology from the University of Calgary and his PhD from the University of Toronto. He teaches a variety of courses related to archaeology, particularly concerning the Arctic and the High North. His current research projects are focused on hunter-gatherer communities and involve archaeological and ethnographic fieldwork in Greenland and the Czech Republic.
