Biography

Matthew Weait is the Director of the Department of Continuing Education at the University of Oxford and a Professor of Law. He is also a Fellow of the Law Society at Harris Manchester College. Previously, he served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Professor of Law at the University of Hertfordshire from 2020 to 2022, and as Executive Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Portsmouth from 2015 to 2020. He was Pro-Vice-Master at Birkbeck, University of London from 2011 to 2015. Matthew completed his BA(Hons) in Law and an MPhil in Criminology at the University of Cambridge, followed by doctoral research at the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies under the supervision of Professor Keith Hawkins. He has taught at various institutions including New College, Oxford, and the Open University. His research interests focus on the intersection of law with public health, particularly in the context of HIV and AIDS. He has contributed to numerous national and international organizations such as the National AIDS Trust and UNAIDS, and has participated in significant conferences on law and human rights. In recognition of his contribution to social sciences, he was elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in 2017 and of the Royal Society for Public Health in 2020.
