Biography

Matthew R. Wolff, MD, is a Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine Center. He has a focus on cardiovascular disease, specifically investigating the genetic molecular basis of genetic dilated cardiomyopathies. Dr. Wolff is a cardiovascular clinician-scientist who has undergone a combined heart and kidney transplant in 2020 due to familial dilated cardiomyopathy resulting from a mutation in the LMNA gene. His current research primarily focuses on pre-clinical studies of novel therapeutics for LMNA-associated familial dilated cardiomyopathy. He employs a murine double knock-in model that replicates the human disease, using induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes that carry the N195K mutation. Dr. Wolff is exploring the role of impaired autophagy in the pathogenesis of cardiac dysfunction associated with these mutations and is developing novel autophagy agonists as potential therapies for aggressive forms of heart failure that respond poorly to conventional treatments.
