Biography

Matthias Arenz is a professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Bern. He obtained his Diploma in Physics from the University of Bonn in 1999 and completed his PhD in Physical Chemistry at the same institution in 2002. Following his doctoral studies, he worked as a postdoc at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in the USA from 2002 to 2004. He led an Emmy Noether group at the Technical University of Munich from 2005 to 2010. Subsequently, he served as an Associate Professor of Chemistry at the University of Copenhagen until 2016, when he joined the University of Bern as a full professor. His research aims to understand the fundamental properties that determine the performance of electrocatalysts, particularly through the development of catalyst synthesis concepts using colloidal methods. His laboratory is equipped with advanced techniques for catalyst synthesis and evaluation, including electron microscopy and various spectroscopic methods.
