Biography

Matthias Hebrok studied biology at the University of Freiburg and completed his doctoral studies at the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology. He conducted post-doctoral research at Harvard University, supported by a Howard Hughes Medical Institute fellowship. Following this extensive training, he accepted a professorship at the University of California, San Francisco, where he led the Diabetes Center from 2010 to 2020. Currently, he is the director of the new TUM Center for Organoid Systems and heads the Institute for Diabetes Organoid Technology at Helmholtz Munich. His research focuses on the differentiation of human stem cells into functional pancreatic organoids. He employs gene editing strategies to develop hormone-producing islet cells, with the aim of creating cell replacement therapies for patients with diabetes. Additionally, his group generates human organoid models to explore new diagnostics and therapies for pancreatic cancer.
