Matthias Lutolf is a Full Professor at EPFL’s Institute of Bioengineering, with a cross appointment at the Institute of Chemical Sciences and Engineering. He trained as a Materials Engineer at ETH Zurich and conducted his PhD studies in collaboration with Jeffrey Hubbell, for which he was awarded the ETH medal. Following his doctorate, he completed his post-doctoral training in Stem Cell Biology with Helen Blau at Stanford University. From 2014 to 2018, he served as the Director of the Institute of Bioengineering. Lutolf is an internationally recognized leader in the fields of stem cell bioengineering and tissue engineering. His research uniquely combines stem cell biology with engineering principles and quantitative thinking. His team, which comprises engineers, chemists, physicists, and developmental biologists, strives to develop technologies with true biological and medicinal applicability. Lutolf’s work has resulted in over 110 peer-reviewed scientific publications in highly reputed journals and more than 25 patents for commercial products. His current research focuses on bioengineering miniature tissues, known as organoids, generated from self-organizing stem cells.
