Biography

Professor Thijs Merkx specializes in the surgical treatment of mouth, throat, and facial cancer, with a particular interest in the early detection of malignant and pre-malignant anomalies in the head and neck area, as well as reconstructive surgery. Merkx trains oral surgeons as part of the advanced head and neck oncology course and serves as chairman of the registration committee for the Dutch Association of Mouth, Throat, and Facial Surgery. His work in diagnosis and treatment of cancer in the head and neck area is concentrated in centers across the Netherlands, specifically at UMC St. Radboud, where he is a member of the Nijmegen Head Neck Group. Additionally, he is a board member of the Dutch Co-operative Head Neck Group and a council member of the foundation for oral & maxillofacial surgery in Tanzania, contributing to dental oral and maxillofacial training programs at Muhimbili University Health & Allied Sciences in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. His research theme includes Healthcare Improvement Science, focusing on the implementation and evaluation of improvements and innovations in medical practices related to cancer treatment.
