Biography

Matthias Quick, PhD, is a Professor of Neurobiology in Psychiatry at Columbia University, within the Department of Psychiatry and the Center for Molecular Recognition at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. He has extensive research expertise in the molecular dynamics of Na+-coupled transport processes. Dr. Quick obtained his Bachelor's degree in 1991, Master's degree in 1995, and PhD in Microbiology/Membrane Transport in 1998 from the University of Osnabrück, Germany. His postdoctoral work at UCLA focused on the human Na+/glucose transporter, hSGLT1, where he established its functional expression in bacteria and further characterized it using electrophysiological methods. Since joining Columbia in 2003, Dr. Quick's research has focused on neurotransmitter:sodium symporters, studying the structure-function relationships with an emphasis on molecular targets for psychostimulants and antipsychotic drugs. He collaborates with leading experts in computational biophysics and biophysical techniques to investigate neurotransmitter transport mechanisms, significantly contributing to the understanding of molecular events involved in these processes.
