Biography

Matthias Rarey leads the Center for Bioinformatics at the University of Hamburg, Germany. He is a computer scientist specializing in bioinformatics and cheminformatics. Until July 2002, he was a group leader in cheminformatics at the Fraunhofer Institute for Algorithms and Scientific Computing. He has conducted research in the cheminformatics departments of SmithKline Beecham and Roche Bioscience. Rarey co-founded the cheminformatics company BioSolveIT. His research group focuses on developing new algorithms for molecular design problems and innovative cheminformatics approaches. Since 1993, he has developed software tools for molecular design that have received international recognition, including FlexX, Features Trees, and others. From 2014 to 2023, he served as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Chemical Information Modeling and is involved in various committees and conference program committees. Rarey has contributed to the establishment of the M.Sc. in Bioinformatics and B.Sc. in Computing Science programs and actively participates in teaching across multiple courses related to computer science and bioinformatics. He is also a member of multiple academic and scientific committees, playing a significant role in advancing research and education in his field.
