Biography

Professor Matthias Richter specializes in Social Determinants of Health, focusing on the intersection of society and health. His research interests encompass social, political, and economic determinants of health and healthcare, particularly throughout the life course and young people's health behaviors. He employs a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods, facilitating interdisciplinary dialogue between social sciences and clinical research. He studied Sociology and Psychology at Bielefeld University, where he also earned his PhD in Sociology. After serving as Managing Director of the Child and Adolescent Health Promotion Center, he moved to the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine at the University of Bern as an Associate Professor. In 2011, he became Full Professor and Director of the Institute of Medical Sociology at the University of Halle-Wittenberg, and in 2022 he was appointed to the Chair of Social Determinants of Health at the Technical University of Munich. His work has been recognized with several awards, reflecting his impact on the field of medical sociology and health research.
