Trained innovation scientist, Matthijs investigates innovation policy strategy. As a tenured assistant professor at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, Matthijs mainly focuses on industrial policy, transitions, mission-oriented innovation policy, and novel forms of smart specialization. His research follows from his PhD thesis, ‘Service Innovation: An Evolutionary Perspective’, which was a runner-up for the ISPIM Innovation Management Dissertation Award in 2016. Matthijs has held a post-doctoral position at the Center for International Development at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. His current work mainly assesses the governance impact of transformative innovation policies targeted at specific sectors and knowledge domains that address societal challenges. Matthijs coordinates Utrecht University’s Mission-oriented Innovation Policy Observatory and fulfills roles as project leader and work package leader in research projects funded by competitive calls, including projects such as REWIRE and AMBITIONS, both funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO). He actively supervises PhD students and postdocs in funded projects like ESMEE, and has contributed to numerous academic journals, including Research Policy and Science and Public Policy, among others. Additionally, Matthijs contributes regularly to Dutch policy-oriented platforms and sits on (inter)national expert committees and advisory boards concerned with innovation policy evaluation.
