Biography

Professor Fibiger conducts research in twentieth-century international history, focusing primarily on the political economy of international relations in Southeast Asia. His book, entitled 'Suharto's Cold War: Indonesia, Southeast Asia, World', published by Oxford University Press in 2023, explores how Indonesian dictator Suharto mobilized resources during the Cold War to wage domestic and regional conflicts, using international aid and investment to construct a counterrevolutionary dictatorship in Indonesia. This comprehensive work, based on archival research across eight countries and in four languages, recasts Indonesian development as a phenomenon deeply entwined with international and transnational issues. Fibiger is currently working on a new book project on the global dollar system. In addition to his book projects, he has published various articles and book chapters on topics ranging from neoconservatism to the Indonesian invasion of East Timor and the Mayaguez crisis. He has received numerous accolades for his scholarship and teaching, including the 2024 Michael H. Hunt Prize from the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations for 'Suharto's Cold War' and the HBS Student Association Faculty Teaching Award for exceptional contributions to the HBS experience of graduating classes.
