Biography

Mattias Näsman's research investigates historical actors and processes that created obstacles as well as facilitated transitions in society, economy, and sustainability. His research addresses questions about the ongoing green transition, exploring how it has been steered and accelerated, what actors have been affected by it, and how they have influenced its direction. His primary focus includes environmental adaptation within the green transition of the automotive industry. Through his research program 'A Promised Land?', he examines the history of the European battery industry to understand the obstacles and challenges that have hindered its development. He has a particular interest in how corporate strategies in technological development interact with politics, currently studying the now-bankrupt company Northvolt. In his doctoral dissertation, Mattias analyzed the prolonged process of modern exhaust emissions control at the intersection of politics, economics, technology, and environmental science, particularly examining the conflicts that have arisen between legislators and the automotive industry in the efforts to produce environmentally friendly cars.
