Dr. Maud Gorbet

Biography

Maud Gorbet is a Professor in the Systems Design Engineering department at the University of Waterloo, jointly appointed to the Biomedical Engineering Program and the Department of Biology. She is also a collaborator with the Centre for Ocular Research and Education. Her research focuses on biocompatibility issues related to biomedical devices, which play a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life and increasing life expectancy for millions of people. Despite improvements, the rate of complications from these devices remains significant, particularly those involving bleeding, clotting, and microbial infections, especially in ocular applications such as contact lenses. Professor Gorbet's laboratory aims to deepen the understanding of interactions between biomaterials and biological systems, particularly in the context of material-induced cellular activation. Her team designs and utilizes robust in vitro models to assess the biocompatibility of biomaterials and to investigate the inflammatory response associated with them. Current research includes exploring the role of neutrophils at the ocular surface and the biological responses to various ophthalmic materials. Her contributions to the field have been recognized through numerous publications in reputable scientific journals.
