Biography

Maura Boldrini is a Professor of Psychiatry and the Director of the Quantitative Brain Biology (Brain QUANT) Institute at the Human Neurobiology laboratory within the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. Her research focuses on understanding the underlying mechanisms of behavioral, cognitive, and emotional changes associated with brain diseases. Dr. Boldrini's work involves studying brain circuits at the cellular and molecular levels, with a keen interest in understanding how mind and brain interact to generate symptoms that cause suffering. She has extensively studied neuron re-growth and has shown that the human brain can generate new neurons throughout a person’s lifetime. Her work on neuron regeneration is linked to learning, memory, stress responses, healthy aging, and mental health. In recent years, she has been investigating neuroinflammation and how COVID-19 affects brain function. Her lab is applying single-cell spatial multiomic technologies to identify transcriptome, epigenome, and proteome biosignatures related to human brain cell functionality and regulatory states. She also mentors predoctoral and postdoctoral fellows, as well as bioengineering and data sciences students, with a strong commitment to culturally aware mentoring and providing equal opportunities for trainees of various backgrounds.
