Biography

Maureen Duffy is an Associate Professor at the University of Calgary's Faculty of Law and a Visiting Professor of Law at South Texas College of Law Houston for the 2023-2024 academic year. She has a strong background in litigation, specializing in children's rights, and has worked in both trial and appellate divisions for the Cook County Public Guardian and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. Duffy holds a DCL and LL.M. from McGill University and a Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Loyola University Chicago, along with a Bachelor of Science in Journalism from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research interests are interdisciplinary and span multiple jurisdictions including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia, focusing on constitutional law, immigration and refugee law, and international human rights law. Duffy is the author of the book 'Detention of Terrorism Suspects: Political Discourse and Fragmented Practices', which won the Hart-SLSA Prize for Early Career Academics in the United Kingdom in 2019. She is actively involved in organizations such as the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) Canada Section and has been recognized with several teaching excellence awards from the University of Calgary's Students' Union.
