Maureen R. Hanson is the Liberty Hyde Bailey Professor in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Cornell University. She completed her B.S. degree at Duke University and obtained her Ph.D. in Cell and Developmental Biology from Harvard University. After completing a NIH postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard, she joined the Biology Department at the University of Virginia before moving to Cornell, where she was promoted to Professor in 1991. Prof. Hanson is actively engaged in research exploring gene expression and organelles within plants, especially chloroplasts and mitochondria. Her current research extends to understanding the mechanisms behind Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), focusing on immune system dysfunction and gene expression variations in patients. This includes innovative projects utilizing synthetic biology to enhance photosynthetic efficiency in plants and studying metabolic alterations in immune cells associated with ME/CFS.
