Biography

Maurice Fallon is a Professor of Robotics at the University of Oxford and a Royal Society University Research Fellow. He leads the Dynamic Robot Systems Group at the Oxford Robotics Institute, which specializes in developing algorithms for navigating quadrupeds and motion planning that enables these robots to move smoothly and accurately. He studied Electronic Engineering at University College Dublin and conducted PhD research in acoustic source tracking at the Department of Engineering of the University of Cambridge. Following his doctoral studies, he participated as a post-doctoral research scientist in the Marine Robotics Group at MIT, contributing to robot mapping projects from 2008 to 2012. From 2012 to 2015, he served as the perception lead for MIT's team in the DARPA Robotics Challenge, a multi-year competition aimed at creating technologies for semi-autonomous humanoid robots in disaster situations. At the Oxford Robotics Institute, he plays a crucial role in several Robotics Hubs funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) as part of a £44.5 million investment in robotics and artificial intelligence over the next five years. His research interests include probabilistic methods, localization, mapping, dynamic robot control, and motion planning for quadrupeds and drones under challenging conditions.
