Dr. Mauricio Avendano Pabon

Biography

Mauricio Avendano is an Associate Professor at the University of Lausanne, based in the Department of Epidemiology and Health Systems at Unisante, where he co-leads the Health Policy Unit. He is also an adjunct Associate Professor at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and he has served as a visiting Professor at King’s College London. His research focuses on public policies and social transformations in health systems, contributing to an understanding of health inequalities in different countries. His interdisciplinary work sits at the junction of epidemiology, public health, economics, demography, and sociology. Avendano employs natural experiments and randomized controlled trials to ascertain the causal impacts of public policies. He has published over 120 papers in leading international journals and has been awarded grants from various prestigious bodies including the European Commission and the Wellcome Trust. He is part of the McArthur Foundation Research Network on Ageing Society and has received multiple academic excellence awards, including grants from the ERC and fellowships from Harvard.
