Mauricio Montal received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and his M.D. from the National University of Mexico. He is a distinguished professor emeritus with significant contributions to the fields of membrane biophysics and neurobiology. His research aims to understand the structures and mechanisms underlying nerve cell function and dysfunction, focusing on the molecular basis of intrinsic excitability in neurons, as well as communication and neuronal cell survival. Montal's interdisciplinary approach combines the inquiry of ion-conducting proteins with the development of drug targets and therapeutic strategies for epilepsy and neurodegenerative diseases. He has received numerous accolades, including the K.C. Cole Award from the Biophysical Society for his outstanding contributions to membrane biophysics and the Research Scientist Award from the NIMH. Montal is also a Guggenheim Fellow and a Fellow of the Biophysical Society. His work includes investigating the dynamics of botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) and the development of biosensors based on lipid bilayer membranes.
Administered by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Curricular groups include Climate-Ocean-Atmosphere (COAP), Geosciences (GEO), and Ocean Biosciences (OBP).
