Dr. Mauricio Najarro

Biography

Mauricio Najarro is a Lecturer in the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at King's College London. With a focus on health inequalities, Najarro's research interests sit at the intersection of sociology and medical anthropology. Previously, they were a Lecturer in the Departments of History and Data Science at the University of California, Berkeley. Najarro holds a Ph.D. in Medical Anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley–UCSF Medical Anthropology Joint Program, as well as a Ph.D. in Theological Religious Studies from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. Their doctoral research involved long-term multimodal studies with psychiatrists, psychiatric social workers, rehab center owners, and members of mutual aid groups focused on recovery from substance use disorders, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic in northern India. Najarro's work delves into the ethical entanglements of vernacular political theologies and telepsychiatry, while their teaching incorporates critical perspectives related to Latin American social epidemiology and South Asian religious practices. They are committed to supervising PhD projects that engage with geographical and conceptual areas of expertise, utilizing rigorous ethnographic methods to explore the intricate relationships among medicine, science, and religion.
