Biography

Mauricio Sacchi is a Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Alberta. He completed his BSc in 1988 at the National University of La Plata in Argentina and earned his PhD in 1996 from the University of British Columbia in Canada. After holding an Assistant Professorship at the University of Alberta from 1997 to 2001 and advancing to Associate Professor between 2001 and 2005, he became a Professor in 2005. He served as Chair of the Physics Department from 2010 to 2015 and again from 2016 to 2021. An active researcher in the field of Geophysics, his work focuses on statistical transform methods for seismic data processing and waveform imaging inversion applied to global seismology. Over the past decade, he has gained recognition for developing algorithms for multi-dimensional seismic data reconstruction and de-noising techniques using sparsity-promoting methods. Currently, he is engaged in studying optimal acquisition design problems, including simultaneous source acquisition and full waveform inversion. He has contributed to the academic community as Editor-in-chief of Geophysics from 2015 to 2017 and as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing since 2020. He has been honored with several awards including the CSEG Medal in 2012 and the Vigil Kauffman Gold Medal Award in 2019.
